The South County Historical Society is a non profit organization that was
developed to preserve the county's history. Over the years the
area's history has slipped away through the passing away of seniors and
the demolition of historical structures. Gene Matlock founded the
organization February of 2002.
The goal of the South County Historical Society is to
"serve our community to preserve the history of our great areas, to share
that history with others that are new to the area, and share it with the
children from which their history will make even great impacts to our
community."
First President, Irene Treppler, said, "Being part of the
South County Historical Society has made me realize that I am one of the
oldest on the board, There are so many historical structures in the
area. So many have been forgotten, but I still remember a few.
We need to have a historical reference to inform people of the past and
how history is important for our community to understand."
The South County Historical Society has many thing under
discussion. There is talk about building a Veteran's Wall, a South
County Historical Museum and a South County Botanical Garden. The
board is discussing their options.
The South County Historical Society is looking for people
